Not Just A Lake
Lake Okanagan in Penticton, British Columbia holds a special place in my memory. It was the first time I got to skate outdoors. As a hockey player, skating on a frozen pond with the icy wind hitting you in the face and wilderness around you is the best feeling in the world. It’s the purest form of the sport and gives you a tingling feeling unlike anything else. It is also where I spent my summers in high school; laying on the beach and partying with the thousands of people that flock to Penticton in the summer season.

Lake Okanagan sounds like a fun place to visit and I can tell from this essay that it is an important place to you.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you described the feeling you get from skating on this lake. Those lines really added your voice to the piece. It helped me not only envision this place, but imagine how it feels to be there. Very awesome!
ReplyDeleteAdding a little more cultural significance to the post could have improved it. Perhaps you could have talked about how others got their start in hockey here as well. As a whole, however, the blog was beautifully written! Thank you for sharing!
I enjoyed the imagery you used to describe the pond. It helps me connect with the lake even though I have never been there.
ReplyDeleteI understand that this place is very important to you and ultimately enhanced your love for hockey, but why is it culturally significant? Maybe state that other kids can find their love to hockey through the lake during the winters.
Overall, it was a great read, and you had me interested from beginning to end!
It's very clear why you enjoy this lake so much, but Elizabeth and Kevin hit the ball right on the nose. Why does everybody else? Just for partying? Honestly though, this is one of the best articles I've seen so far. I was put into this place, I felt the air hitting me in the face, and now I actually want to visit. Lol.
ReplyDeleteI have only ever seen skating on a lake in movies, but your imagery made me feel like I was on the ice. I have to agree with everyone else, how is it culturally significant? I know it's culturally significant to hockey players, but why? is it a hot spot for them to skate? Overall, really great.
ReplyDeleteWonderful writing! I really enjoyed the personal descriptions you made of why this place was important to you! I've always had a phobia of skating on frozen ice (at ponds or lakes) so power to you!
ReplyDeleteI can see why this place holds a personal significance for you. Good job with the description.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Elizabeth, Kevin, Ryan, and Erika with the cultural significance.
Having such a meaningful spot like this to yourself is very special. The visuals that I rendered in my head was magnificent.
ReplyDeleteI think a bit more details on the history of this frozen pond would seal the deal.
I could only imagine how great of a feeling that ice to skate and play on a frozen pond. I wish i could say the same for basketball but theres outdoor courts evrywhere.
ReplyDeleteI can understand the feeling of skating outdoors and the rush it gives since I play hockey. But this lake sounds like nothing I have ever skated on; the imagery you used to describe skating on the lake put me right there next to you skating. I also agree with our other classmates when they say that some historical background and cultural significance to everyone else would make this an unreal blog.
ReplyDeleteIt's very clear that this place is very special to you and you really enjoy your time there. I can't ever imagine skating on an iced lake, it sounds amazing. I like how you included that not just you, but your friends and others also gather at this area to enjoy time together.
ReplyDeleteLove the picture! I also enjoyed reading how the pond relates not just to you but to thousands of individuals that use it in the summer. Some history details would have made your post better though.
ReplyDeleteI like how well you described the significance of this pond in your life, but would like to see more factual, historical information.
ReplyDeleteIt would be really cool to ice skate on a pond, nonetheless play hockey on it. Well done.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful imagery!! Only suggestion is more factual relevance, other than that astounding job.
ReplyDeleteThe picture you used ties in very well with your description of British Columbia. I've been to Canada a few times and I loved the scenery there. You make it obvious why it is so important to you, and the sentiment clearly comes across in your writing.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job of explaining why the lake was so important to you. You described the setting beautifully as well as how the lake defines you. I grew up in Colorado where I only ever skated outside on lakes, so I can easily understand what you're talking about. I do agree with the above comments that you could have explained better the lake's significance to the community. But you definitely explained very well why the lake is so significant to you.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job describing the frozen pond and it was so important for you.
ReplyDeleteYou should talk about the historical significant of the pond why it matters to other people in the area.
Very good descriptive narrative, as well as a masterful use of the English language. But why couldn't you get it up.... to 100 words?
